  • Activism: the use and action of campaigning to bring about political or social change
  • Asylum Seeker: an asylum seeker is a person who is seeking protection as a refugee and is still waiting to have his/her claim assessed
  • Civilian:a person not in the armed services or the police force
  • Civil War: a war between citizens of the same country
  • Dissent: expression or holding of opinions not in accordance with what is officially held
  • Ethnic: of, relating to, or characteristic of a sizable group of people sharing a common and distinctive racial, national, religious, linguistic, or cultural heritage
  • Persecute: to oppress or harass with ill-treatment, especially because of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or beliefs
  • Refugee: a refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group
  • Regime: a government in power
  • Shell: a hollow projectile filled with an explosive charge designed to explode used in conflict
  • Shia Muslim: a member of the branch of Islam that regards Ali as the legitimate successor to the Prophet Mohammed and rejects the first three caliphs
  • Smuggler: the facilitation, transportation, attempted transportation or illegal entry of a person or persons across an international border, in violation of one or more countries laws
  • Solitary confinement: the isolation of a prisoner in a separate cell as a punishment
  • Sunni Muslim: a member of the branch of Islam that accepts the first four caliphs as rightful successors to the Prophet Muhammad
  • Resettlement: the transportation of people to a new place, such as a new country
  • Visa: an endorsement on a passport indicating that the holder is allowed to enter, leave, or stay for a specified period of time in a country
